Finding Your Instagram Style

My name is Jessica Slaughter, and I am a blogger who sucks at Instagram. There, I said it.

Contrary to most of my posts, this one isn’t a “how-to” based on my experience of actually doing what I’m talking about. Instead, I’m writing about my struggle to find my own Instagram style, and sharing the steps I’m taking to get there. So here we go.

Finding Your Instagram Style

Instagram is becoming extremely popular in the blogging world, not only as a way of gaining more readers, but for connecting with your followers and letting them see your personality rather than just read about it. “Professional Instagramers” have become a thing, experts are holding classes on how to get to their level, and making an Instagram post has become almost as important as making a blog post. It doesn’t seem like a hard skill to develop. Just snap some photos, throw on a filter, make a clever caption, and bam, 500+ likes. But it is. Instagraming is a skill, and I’m determined to attain it.

Now I know there’s a lot of controversy in the blogging world about social media and comparing yourself to others on it. That’s not necessarily what I’m trying to do here, though it’s sort of coming out like that. It’s not that I feel bad about myself for not being Instagram famous, or for not having perfect photos like some other bloggers. I mean, it’s just a picture. I just think it’s awesome that some bloggers have found a sense of style in their photos, and are able to share that style with the world. It’s so inspirational! So no, I’m not comparing myself to other bloggers because I don’t think I’m good enough. I’m comparing myself to other bloggers because I personally want to get better at using Instagram, and they’re the perfect source of inspiration and motivation.

To make this search for my style a bit easier, I decided to find a few favorite Instagramers and look through their photos (this was a very creepy process) to get a sense of where they’ve come from, the style stages they’ve gone through, and where they are now. One of the most encouraging things I got out of this step was seeing that most of these bloggers started out exactly where I am – with a mishmosh of photos, experiments with every filter imaginable, and no clear sense of style. Lesson learned?

Anyone can develop an Instagram style — your Instagram history doesn’t matter.

After narrowing down my favorites, I started focusing on the current styles they had, and sorted them into categories.

Warm Vibes, Contrast, & Coffee

Instagram Soft Tones

Top: @oakandoats, @kthrnhnsn
Bottom: @elahtree, @megmcilvaine

These Instagramers share several style characteristics, and they’re also some of my favorite bloggers! Their pictures always make me happy, because they’re real life moments captured in a beautiful way. Their attention to contrast really brings out the colors in their photos, while giving them an in-the-shade look so they’re not too in your face. As for coffee? Well, the idea of coffee just has a certain vibe to it, and that’s the only way I can describe this style. Coffee. Oh, and they’ve all perfected the coffee-in-hand shot.

Color, Color, Color

Instagram Color

@abeautifulmessofficial, @britandco

If you ever need color inspiration, check out these Instagramers. Their feeds are exciting, bright, and full of energy! It’s pretty much impossible to scroll by one of their photos without noticing it, because they always stand out in a feed. I love how they are able to combine such contrasting colors in a beautiful way, and their staging is perfect. There’s a reason the owners of these accounts are so successful in the blogging world! (hint hint, they really know what they’re doing)

White Space, Desks, & Pops Of Color

@laurenelizhook, @whitv, @thenectarcollective

These ladies have beautiful feeds filled with bright colors and lots of white space. I’m loving the clean, sharp look this style creates, and it draws all of your attention to the subject, whether that be a notebook, food item, or person. A lot of their photos have to do with their personal businesses and blogs, but they’ve managed to do so without seeming spammy at all. This style also translates well with product-based Instagram accounts, because you can shoot in the same place every time with whatever product you’re trying to promote. I’ll talk a bit more about how these ladies have used products in their photos later!

A Few Things To Consider

  • Prop styling is another huge aspect to Instagram style, and these ladies have it down. Social media is all about connecting with others, and I know that whenever I purchase from a small business, I want to share how much I love their product with my own followers!
  • Consistency is something I’ve always struggled with. The last time I posted to Instagram was over two weeks ago, so there’s no reason I should expect to be growing my following. I hope that once I find my style, I’ll be more motivated to post a few times a week!
  • Captions have never been my expertise. I’ve tried emojis only, quotes, puns, and no caption altogether, and I’m really not sure what route I want to take. I definitely want to connect with my followers more though, so maybe I’ll try asking a question at the end?

I’m not entirely sure yet which style I’m heading towards, but I’m thinking the first one would fit best with my lifestyle. Although I love the white space look, I just don’t have many places to shoot photos like that. And while I love color, my belongings and clothes are definitely more toned down and natural, which again fits in with that first style. I guess I have some decisions to make!

UPDATE: Guys. I’m getting there. Check me out or find my progress in this post!

How skilled are you in the Instagram world? Have you found your style, are you searching like me, or do you enjoy just posting whatever comes to mind (because that totally works too)?

GREAT post! I can’t stand the white look but I do love Oak and Oats and those others!

    • http://www.oakandoats.com/ Elizabeth Mayberry

Cassie :) You are so sweet!!!!

      • http://www.sagetheblog.com/ Cassie Lee

        Anytime!

    • http://thebloggingbrew.com Jessica Slaughter

Thanks Cassie!! I wish I felt more strongly about one than the rest, that would make this decision so much easier!

I’ve been working on my Instagram pretty intentionally for about a month now, and I definitely have an average increase in likes/comments per post. I used to rarely reach 10 likes/comments, and now most of mine are 10+. The app Afterlight has been a game-changer for me! Yes, it’s $0.99, but totally worth it. The biggest changes I made were 1) the exact same border each time and 2) more consistency overall. So I post more often, and I aim for a consistent-ish look. I’m a bit of a cross between the white and the color. I go for warmth in my photo-editing over coolness.

    • http://www.oakandoats.com/ Elizabeth Mayberry

      Consistency is key!!!

    • http://thebloggingbrew.com Jessica Slaughter

I’ll have to check that app out! And I would think that white and color blend pretty well together, so they’ll probably still look consistent!

Too many faces in IG is a no no for me, I don’t want to know every aspect of a person life (Facebook is the social network for that), on IG I want to see pretty, creative photos. I was about to follow you as a way to keep me updated with the blog and to see your [curated] daily life but then I saw that your feed has too many personal photos. It’s nothing personal really, I do the same with every new feed I found and is a way to only see things that inspires me. I’m in the same journey but I think that I found my style recently, I’m more in the white with pops of color style, and cool tone (HB1 from VSCO is my fav).

    • http://www.oakandoats.com/ Elizabeth Mayberry

I kinda think the opposite but the same at the same time! I look to instagram to be inspired but I think it is the best social media because we get to see into people’s lives! I love to see the little things – whether people in their lives, their favorite eateries, and all the little things that they do to live a creative life!!

      • http://www.beinspiredcreative.com Sara Rae Hughes

I think that is such a beautiful thing about Instagram that it’s so personal. I love a mix of both. I love getting the behind the scene glimpse into a persons life, but, I also love seeing people’s creative sides. Instagram and Pinterest make my heart happy :)

    • http://thebloggingbrew.com Jessica Slaughter

I totally get what you mean, everyone has their preference! I always feel like the things around me just aren’t artsy enough to be Instagram worthy, but I think I just need to start looking at things from a different perspective. And I love that filter!

  • http://www.foreverashley.com/ Ashley LaMar

I’m TERRIBLE at Instagram! It’s mostly my dogs and other random stuff but no serious purpose. I’ll get it one day…maybe…but probably not.

    • http://thebloggingbrew.com Jessica Slaughter

I totally get what you mean, I end up deleting half of my pictures because I think, “why in the world did I ever post this???” It’s definitely going to take a while for me to get into this!

  • Carmilla FaShih

Great post! I’m working on my instagram and blog image. The spaces I love don’t really fit with what I’m doing in my creative space… it is a journey. Totally agree… I love the clean, crisp white space, but I have no where to shoot that type of look. Thank you for sharing! ♡

    • http://thebloggingbrew.com Jessica Slaughter

Thank you! That’s definitely an issue I’ve run into. I feel like my blog’s vibe is totally different than what I want my Instagram to be like, and I also don’t have anywhere to take beautiful, naturally lit photos. I guess that’s part of the adventure!

  • http://www.thenestednomad.com/ Brittany Bergman

The struggle is real! I’ve been thinking a lot about the Instagram style I’d like to develop, and I’m finding that what I like to shoot and post is often different from what I like to look at. For example, I love the crisp, white-space photos but tend to be more contrasty, bright, and non-styled. Now I just need to be okay with that and play it up!

    • http://www.oakandoats.com/ Elizabeth Mayberry

It is okay to love a lot of looks but not be them all! :) You’ll find your grove!!

    • http://thebloggingbrew.com Jessica Slaughter

I totally get what you mean!! I absolutely love the white-space photos, but I know I’ll never have the time/space to stage them up. I feel like my photos tend to be a bit more outdoors-y and natural, so now I just need to get to taking some!

  • http://www.riversandroads.me/ Meg McIlvaine

Oh my goodness, sweet lady, thanks for including me in this! I LOVE that you are researching Instagram styles and figuring out what best fits YOU. One of my favorite parts of social media is the experimental process of trying to discover your online style. You are doing great!

    • http://thebloggingbrew.com Jessica Slaughter

Of course!! And thank you! I’ve been loving all of the travel pictures you post, they make me want to jump on a plane and explore! It really is a fun process of experimenting. I think I’ve finally found my Twitter style, but Instagram will be a whole ‘nother story!

  • http://www.oakandoats.com/ Elizabeth Mayberry

I am so honored and thrilled you called my feed Coffee Style! My friends say I always post about coffee but I have far more other photos than that -now maybe they just mean my feed is Coffee style!!! :)

Great tips and advice! I love how Instagram is such a personal media and you can see into peoples lives! You’ll find your style but don’t stress to much about it! I sometimes worry about my “style” but apparently I am doing something right! ;)

Keep up the good work and BE YOU!

    • http://thebloggingbrew.com Jessica Slaughter

I love using that word to describe things, and it usually makes no sense at all to the people I’m talking to! I think it’s because when I stop by a coffee shop, I feel so much happier and my day immediately gets better, so I’ve given it its own vibe!

And thank you so much! I’ve definitely gone through periods of worrying about people judging my photos and things like that, but while I was writing this post I realized none of that really matters! Instagram should just be a fun place to share about my life, so that’s what I’m going to make it!

  • http://www.elahtree.com/ Samantha@Elah Tree

Ah! Thank you so much for including me! That is the sweetest and I’m so glad my feed has inspired you. Instagram is by far my favorite social platform because I love how inspiring photos can be and how they can tell so many stories. I think style comes by finding unique ways to tell your story. It evolves over time and sometimes you’ll find it and won’t even know it. Keep going, you’re doing so great! :)

    • http://thebloggingbrew.com Jessica Slaughter

Of course!! And that’s such an interesting way to look at it. I feel like sometimes I post for the sake of updating my feed after I haven’t in a while, and that’s part of the reason my style hasn’t really developed. I want to start posting because something in my life deserves to be shared!

  • http://www.beinspiredcreative.com Sara Rae Hughes

Instagram is such uncharted territory it totally can be intimidating. When I first started on Instagram I just did whatever. Then I got serious about it and made a conscious effort to post consistently 2-3 times a day, during key times (Iconosquare is amazing!), and I kept a consistent style. I found that I was able to grow my following rather quickly and I started even giving Instagram tips and tricks.

Well, I personally evolved, and got into a funk with posting. Mostly, because they were posts that I hand crafted and I felt like maybe they should be pictures I’d been taking. But, really, there are no rules! I’m going to keep creating and sharing quotes, inspiration and little snippets from my daily life here and there like I used to. Because, it speaks to me… and really… that’s what matters, right?

You’re doing great, Jessica, and I’ll be following you :)

    • http://thebloggingbrew.com Jessica Slaughter

That’s what I love about Instagram, there are so many different styles out there and everyone can experiment with whatever style they want! There isn’t really an Instagram standard, which lets people be so creative with what they post. And I love that you’re sticking to what you feel is right for you!! It can be so hard to avoid feeling pressured to conform to the way everyone else is posting, but standing out from the crowd is always a good thing!

  • http://www.csandsblog.com Jasmine Maria

Instagram is where I find inspiration on what I want to post on my blog or IG. I love seeing the poppy colors, warmth pictures and even the clean white backgrounds. I’m still learning to take pictures and making sure it draws attention but sometimes it’s hard when you don’t have a good camera like most bloggers do. Don’t get me wrong my iPhone takes good pictures but I’m sure people use their cameras lol

    • http://thebloggingbrew.com Jessica Slaughter

I feel the same way sometimes, I’ll see perfect pictures that I can’t believe were taken with an iPhone, and think, I must be doing something wrong here! But I would guess some of them do take their pictures with a camera and transfer it over to their phone!

  • http://www.a-touch-of-teal.com Katie Urban

This is such a great post! I recently have been trying to nail down an Instagram style, and am so glad that I am not the only one who has been as well! Thanks for taking stock of some great Instagrammers – you gave me a lot of good ideas.
