How To Shop For College On A Budget

I’ve grown up with the mindset that with a little research and effort, I can almost always find what I’m looking for at a discounted price. Once I got a job and started using my own money more often, this became even more important, because price tags looked a lot more like number of hours worked. Are 10 hours of my life really worth that new top? Do I really need to eat out, or can I deal with another night of cereal and a pb&j? Usually my shopping consists of searching for one or two specific items, but then college shopping became a thing.

If you’re already in college, you can probably relate to this, but if you’re just getting to that part of your life, let me tell you: college shopping is a real eye-opener. There are SO MANY things you have to buy, and a lot of it isn’t cheap. School supplies, food, clothing, and dorm decor are just the basics; what about a mattress cover? A shower caddy? Oh, your classes are far apart? I guess you’ll need a bike too. Things add up quickly, and as soon as you think you’re done, 5 more things get added to your list. College shopping isn’t going to be cheap by any means, but there are several ways to find the things you need at reasonable prices, and here are some tips for your trip!

Create A List

Shopping with a list is one of the only tricks that prevents me from buying way more than I need. Not only will it keep you accountable and on track, but you won’t have to worry about forgetting something if you have it written down. Looking at other students’ lists is a great starting point, and I posted my own last year for reference! When creating your list, be sure to think about how much room you’ll have, and what items you already own. Some dorms may be big enough for a futon and table, while others will only fit the furniture provided.

Search Online First

Before heading out to the store, searching online can make finding sales an easier and quicker process. Many stores hold their sales both in-store and online, so you can make of the list of them and only visit those in person. If you’re lucky, you might find some special sales that are only available online, which aren’t always obvious! For example, I bought my comforter last week from Target, and ended up having it shipped for free at $20 less than it was in-store, even though there wasn’t an obvious bedding sale going on. You don’t need to do research for everything on your list, but the big items like bedding and furniture are worth the time!

Look For Student Discounts

Once I got my ID, I started using it everywhere. You’d be amazed at how many great stores offer student discounts. My favorites are J.Crew/J.Crew Factory and Madewell, which both offer 15% off when you show your ID. Last week, I got this necklace at J.Crew Factory (originally priced at over $50) for 60% off, plus the additional 15% discount, making it only $12. These discounts are magical.

Shop At Discount Stores

Kind of obvious, but stores like Ross and Marshall’s have great deals on everything from dorm decor to kitchen supplies. I bought all of my tupperware, plates, clothes hangers, and other organization items from Ross, and most of it was 50% less than the original retail price. The tough thing about these stores is you can’t go in expecting to find something, because their inventory changes all the time. It can also be hard to find items that match, so these stores are better for finding miscellaneous items on your list.

Ask Around!

If you’re heading into college this year, you probably have a few friends that already went through this phase and may have some things to get rid of. If you’re looking for something basic like plates or a comforter, ask your older friends if they have extras or are simply getting rid of their old ones. They may offer them to you at a great price, or even give them to you for free! Of course, you won’t be able to ask for something overly specific like a certain color or pattern, but the price tag might be worth the trade.

The Wishlist: Anthropologie, Madewell, & Other Faves

After what seemed to be a never-ending week of work and meetings and pre-finals stress, I am SO HAPPY that Friday is here! Whenever I find time to step away from my to-do list, I usually end up blogging (of course), scrolling through social media, or online shopping. My ShopStyle favorites list has been filling up all week long, so here are some items I’m looking to find on my much needed shopping trip tomorrow.

What styles are you crushing on this season? Are there any must-have items I should add to my list?

Why I Use thredUP

I’ve been meaning to make this post for a long time, and after months of putting it aside, I just couldn’t stand not telling y’all about this treasure of a website. I heard about it through a blogger that I can’t remember the name of to save my life, and I’ve been hooked ever since! I think I’m on my fifth box now? I’ve hyped this company* up so much by word of mouth, and I’m super eager to share it with my readers now. I’ll take you through one of my recent purchases (by recent I mean it arrived this morning and I’m still freaking out) and give you a quick run-through of the thredUP process. If you have any questions, let me know in the comments!

WHAT IS thredUP ANYWAY?

thredUP* is an online consignment store. They have a huge collection of clothing, shoes, and accessories that are either gently used or new with tags, and only put the best items on their website. You can find some fantastic brands like J.Crew, Gap, and Athleta at discounts of up to 90%! It’s hard to even buy something in-store when there are discounts like that online. And the awesome thing about thredUP is that you can buy AND sell clothing on the same site!

Like I said earlier, I’ve had quite a bit of experience with thredUP over the past few months. Every time I pull up the website or app, I find something I just have to get. You can easily customize the browsing feature and limit findings to your size, favorite brands, specific colors, and so much more. One thing I absolutely love is the personal shop feature. It allows you to save whatever customizations you’ve made to come back to later, and you can be notified when something that matches your specifications is added to the website. With people sending their clothes in all the time, it’s like having a new store to shop through every day!

I haven’t sold any of my clothing yet, so I won’t speak too much on that part, but I will say that it sounds super simple. They’ll send you a bag to put your items in, pay for the shipping, and pay you for every item they sell to someone. Perfect for those spring cleaning days!

HOW AFFORDABLE IS IT?

I’ve always been skeptical of shopping online, because I was convinced that once shipping costs were added in, it would be more expensive than just shopping in-store. thredUP completely changed my mind. On average, I spend about $30 per box, and buy between 4 and 6 items. Most of those items are quality brand clothing with in-store prices ranging from $15-$40. On thredUP, the average item I purchase is between $5 and $15, including dresses and sweaters! In fact, on my last order, everything I received was under $10. I could not be more pleased with the affordability!

STILL NOT HOOKED?

Here are a few other thredUP features that just top off what I’ve mentioned so far:

-shipping is free after $70! That might sound like a lot of money to spend, but if you only want to purchase a few times a year, you can load up on one box and easily surpass that line. Hello closet makeover!

-referrals! This is another reason I’ve found thredUP so affordable. They have a fantastic referral program, where every time someone signs up with your personal referral link*, they’ll receive $10 to spend. When they make a purchase, you’ll receive $10 too!

*these are referral links, so I will earn a bit if you use them, but you definitely don’t have to!

-fantastic brands! thredUP doesn’t except everything they receive, which is how they make their inventory so great. You can find brands like Lululemon, Madewell, The North Face, and LOFT at crazy good prices.

-you’re being green! By purchasing used, you’re lightening your carbon-footprint and getting great clothes at the same time!

MY LAST BOX

I think this is my favorite box yet. I purchased 7 items (the workout leggings I ordered aren’t pictured) and they all came in perfectly! Oh, and if you couldn’t tell, I kind of love stripes.
